Of course the main attraction of Acapulco is the beaches. The area was the first in Mexico to build beach front resorts and they quickly became very popular with tourists. Even today the beaches remain a popular attraction. Most people these days would like to be a little more active than just lying on the beach all day and therefore water sports have become very popular. The area offers outstanding diving, both scuba and snorkeling. There is also surfing, waterskiing and kayaking available. Acapulco is world famous for its fishing, attracts fishermen from around the world, usually in pursuit of the sailfish.

The other thing that Acapulco is famous for is its nightlife. Since its start as a major tourist destination the nightclubs have been one of the major attractions. One thing that Acapulco has going for it that most other beachfront resorts don't is its history. The area was home to the Aztecs and when the Spanish showed up the recognized the value of the town as a harbor. To this day Acapulco remains the busiest harbor in Mexico as it is perfectly suited to it. All of that history has created a town that is a unique mix of architecture from the traditional Mexican to the Spanish to the modern. There are also a number of historical sites to be seen nearby. These would include Aztec ruins and the remnants of Spanish rule.

There are a number of other attractions that can't be missed in Acapulco. The cliff divers are a must see. Until you actually see them do it live it is hard to realize just how dangerous it is. Another attraction for those who aren't squeamish is the bullfights. While obviously this isn't for everybody they are an important part of the local culture and really are something that everybody should see once. There is also a tour of the botanical gardens that shouldn't be missed. There are a number of unique plant species as well as tropical birds that make the trip well worth taking.
